Job Interviews

One cannot imagine any adult person who has not yet went through the trauma of a job interview. It is especially the first job interview which may be the worst experience one can have – only worst experience when a person is not prepared. Being well prepared means that it could be one of a person’s best experiences!

But how can one ensure it would be the best experience? Actually it is quite easy. The secret lies in preparedness. One must be fully prepared. It all started with a well prepared curriculum vitae because if it were not well prepared you would not have been invited for the interview in the first place!

So the first obstacle was negotiated without problems. The next step is to ensure that you are an expert on the company, business, institute, etc. who invited you for the interview.  It may just happen that the interviewer may ask you the mission or vision of the company or business. It would be a disaster if you would not be able to answer any question on your future employer!

You do not have a second change to create a first impression. First impressions are lasting – make sure you are wearing your best suit or dress. Shoes must be clean and shiny and irrespective of the fashion trends – studs or cheap jewelry is a big no – no. Remember to have neatly manicured nails. Hair must be neat, clean and groomed.

On the day of the interview ensure that you get there in good time. The interview begins when you arrive at the car park or reception area and finishes when you leave the premises again. The motto is that you should wait for them and not them for you. Secretarial and other staff is often asked their opinions or impressions of candidates so behavior is critical. Before the interview, leave stuff such as coats, briefcases, etc. at the reception. Only take in necessary items such as a handbag, a copy of your CV and information you may have acquired on the respective company.

Be ready to shake hands firmly with the interviewer, smile and look people in the eye when introduced to them. Only sit down when asked to and always be polite, friendly and confident.

During the interview, look the interviewer in the eyes, do not place your elbows on the desk and do not slouch in your seat. Avoid fidgeting. Be confident to present your case and make sure you answer what is being asked. Give enthusiastic answers like “yes” or “no”. Half-hearted answers like “I don’t mind” won’t impress anyone. Make sure you can justify any statements and at all costs avoid an argument. Most people are very nervous when going for an interview but other can be too confident and give the interviewer the impression that they know all the answers. Neither of these is going to help you much in getting the job. The impression that you create during the interview can make the difference between whether you get the job or not.

Employers want to know how the company will benefit from hiring you. Present yourself as a “benefit package” to the interviewer. Interviewers are trained to find out as much as possible about you, not only as an employee but also as a person. Do not be vague in answering personal questions – it can be disastrous. Your answers would hint at your values, moral fiber and beliefs. Remember, they want the best pest person for the job, not the best worker.

At the end of the interview you would usually be asked whether you have any questions of your own. It is important to have at least a couple of questions at the ready. If you cannot think of any question tell the interviewer that you feel everything has been adequately covered.

In conclusion, appear enthusiastic and confident. Be honest and up-front. It could be your best or worst experience in your life – the ball is in your court. Make the best of it!
