Telephone Etiquette

Nothing is so annoying than phoning a business or Public Service entity and the person answering the phone knows nothing about telephone etiquette.

But, before getting too annoyed, we must thank Edison for this annoying etiquette of “hello, hello”!

Thomas Alva Edison, the well-known American inventor who almost patented 1 300 inventions also made his significant contribution to modern life annoyances when he suggested how to answer the telephone.

He advised people to answer the telephone with a simple “Hello”. One telephone company in the late 1870’s had recommended shouting “Ahoy!, Ahoy!”

At least Edison’s recommendation was more civilized!

  1. I wonder if the word "Hello" in telephone calls hasn't existed and, instead, we used "Ahoy!” I think it may sound like a pirate for me, haha. But, we must thank those two rivals, Bell and Edison, for inventing this technology. Because of them, more jobs were generated particularly for call center agents and receptionists.

  2. Some folks from the customer service sector at times forget this concept. Telephone etiquette is as important as your customers, since this efficiently helps in establishing good customer relations. One surefire tip to make your clients feel important is asking them about their day and answering as politely as you can. This way, issues will be addressed fairly for both parties concerned.

  3. I’d prefer the traditional “hello” over any other word in answering phone calls. It’s a word popular enough regardless of your dialect. Saying “Hello” is the nicest way to start a good conversation.
