The plastic flying saucers now known as Frisbees get their name from a US pie maker. William Russell Frisbie opened the Frisbie Pie Company in Connecticut in 1871 near the University of Yale.
Yale students who bought Frisbie’s products invented or started the game of Frisbie. Though whether it was the pie tins that they threw to each other or the pies themselves is not clear.
Plastic versions of the saucer shape copied from the pie tins were first made in the 1940’s by Walter Frederick Morrison and sold under the name of Morrison’s Flying Saucer. Later the name was changed to Frisbee, after the pie man!
