My favourite pet is the dog and as there are uncountable breeds, I will publish short descriptive articles of my favourite breeds – in alphabetical order and not in order of preference!
The Basset is of ancient lineage and was used in his native France to hunt badgers and wolves. This hunting instinct has not been bred out by any means. A substantially-built hound on short, slightly crooked legs with massive feet, the Basset has a lean head with a well wrinkled face and long pendulous ears. With short, smooth coats Bassets are easy to groom, but being low to the ground they do gather mud easily.
The basset is a tough dog with a placid, friendly temperament, but it is a mistake to equate his languorous appearance with inactivity. Like all good trial dogs, once the Basset catches a whiff of an interesting scent, he is off and running and soon out of sight.
A Basset needs plenty of exercise to keep him happy and fit.
